Marine Rudder Stock

Marine Rudder Stock

Application

The rudder stock refers to the shaft on which the rudder blade rotates, which is used to bear and transmit the force acting on the rudder blade and the force of the rudder to the rudder turning device. Its reaction force makes the ship steer. The rudder stock should have sufficient strength. The section with the largest bending moment on the rudder stock is at the lower rudder bearing, so the diameter of the rudder stock at the lower rudder bearing is generally determined first. For double fulcrum rudders, it may gradually decrease downward from the top edge of the rudder blade, but should not be less than 0.75 times the diameter of the rudder stock at the lower rudder bearing. For single fulcrum suspended rudder, the diameter from the top edge of the rudder blade downward may be reduced to 0.4 times the diameter of the rudder stock at the lower rudder bearing. Convective rudders are to be of equal strength when vertical bulkheads are used instead of the rudder stock.

At the same time, for rudders that are not in the propeller wake (rudders on barges, middle rudders with two propellers and three rudders), the calculated value of the diameter of the rudder stock is reduced by 10%. The rudder stock should be made in one piece. If flange connection is used, the strength of the bolts should be calculated. For ships sailing in the rapids section and the perennial drift wood section, the diameter of the rudder stock should be increased by 5% according to the calculated value.
